Behold We Stand At The Threshold!

As we stand upon the threshold of, yet again, another hunting season, I think I’m just as excited today about it as I’ve ever been!  Hunting is part of me.  It’s part of my family tradition but also, I think it goes deeper, down to genetics.  Not sure what it all means but I do know this, somewhere around the middle of August the mornings seem to flip from that oppressive humid hotness to something cooler and less cruel that resembles those fall mornings we love so much.  That right there makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck and tingles my senses.  It invokes memories past of the shiver in the treestand as I hear the “tick tick” in the leaves behind me or the snort and bawl of a single beagle as she picks her way through a thick patch of briars to quickly be joined by a chorus of her companions.  It’s the excited whispers between amigos in the blind as we strain our necks to catch a glimpse of cackling symphony that are locked up and gliding into our decoys.  Yasss!  These are just snapshots of what makes me tick.  It’s what speaks to me, It’s what I live for.  And I’m ready for it to begin!

Labor Day this year will mark the opening day of dove season here in North Carolina.  Typically, you get the Saturday before Labor Day to throw lead, but we’ll have to settle for what we can get, So this coming Monday morning, many of us will be sitting on a small folding chair or a bucket on the edge of a field somewhere, more than likely sweating profusely with a few boxes of shells and a shotgun that your grandpa left for us.  We’ll be squinting into the sky waiting for a small grey colored bird to come blasting by your position.  It might not sound like much to the casual observer but to you and me we can give each other the slightest nod and smile because we know…

I hope you have a safe and happy hunting season this year!  Let’s get it on!
